Wyatt woke with a scream dying on his lips. He was covered in sweat and his body was wracked with shivers from the remnants of the nightmare that had plagued him since he returned home. It was the same every damn time. A little kid, no more than eight years old, with a bomb strapped to his chest. Wyatt sitting on the roof of a building with another sniper whose guns were trained on the child in the middle of the street. The rest of his platoon clearing a building with no clue of the child headed straight toward him. Wyatt and the other sniper, Tom from Alabama, trying to radio in to their commander, but not reaching him. To this day, Wyatt didn’t know why. Tom had been whispering to Wyatt to take the shot because he had a better angle. But Wyatt couldn’t do it. He froze.

Wyatt remembered a couple members of his platoon coming out of the building. He remembered the child running toward them, hearing the sound of a bullet exiting a rifle and seeing the child drop to the ground, inches from his platoon members. Tom had taken the shot.

Even after that, the army had kept him overseas. It wasn’t until their platoon was attacked and Wyatt almost lost half his face and did lose over half his unit that they sent him home. The army told him three tours in Afghanistan was enough and he needed to focus on his health, both mental and physical. He had returned home with an honorable discharge but the nightmare remained.

“Is everything okay, son?” Wyatt’s dad was standing in the doorway, his body casting a shadow in the hallway.

This wasn’t the first time Wyatt had called out in his sleep. His dad was the one who came to check on him every time. Wyatt figured his mom didn’t want to embarrass him. It was one reason he needed his own place. He didn’t want to subject his parents to any more of his nightmares.

“Yeah, I’m okay,” Wyatt replied, trying to calm his breathing. “I’m sorry I woke you. Is Mom still asleep?”

“Yeah,” his dad lied. Wyatt knew his mom woke up every single time. Maybe the lie helped his dad feel better.

“I’m really sorry, Dad. I promise I’m trying to find my own place.”

Wyatt’s dad shook his head. “Don’t you worry about it, son,” his dad replied, his voice thick with emotion. “I can’t imagine the things you saw. If you ever want to talk about it, just let me know. I don’t have a degree like Dr. Wilkerson, but your old dad is a good listener.”

“About that. I don’t think I’m going to go anymore.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“There’s only so much I can rehash before I start repeating myself. It’s time.”

“Whatever you want to do, son. Your mom and I support you in whatever you choose. And you can stay with us however long you need.”

“Thanks, Dad.” Wyatt appreciated his dad’s offer, but he had to get out of their house as soon as possible.
